GUIDANCE FOR CARE HOMES IN THE MANAGEMENT OF BEHAVIOURAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SYMPTOMS OF DEMENTIA (BPSD)

The National Dementia Strategy was launched in 2009 by the Department of Health in England.

The strategy was based on extensive consultation with service users and carers about what was important to them when they were living with dementia. The strategy therefore sets out what we need to do to support people with dementia to live well throughout their journey.

Many people living in residential and nursing care have some form of mental health need, such as dementia or depression, which affects their quality of life and their general health and wellbeing. The care provided by the staff working in care settings is key to living well with dementia. Staff are also very well placed to provide information and support to families of people living with dementia.

To support the implementation of the National Dementia strategy the role of the Dementia Liaison and Co-ordination Champions are being developed (This initiative is based upon the Dementia Training and Education Strategy for Gloucestershire Council)
