The Department of Health have developed a new funding stream, known as Workforce Development Fund,  disseminated by Skills for Care to support the ongoing professional development of staff across Adult Social Care.

You will be familiar with the previous title of Training Strategy Implementation Fund (TSI), when you were able to claim for Common Induction Standard units and monies towards your short mandatory courses.  This funding stream ceased to exist from April 2011 and therefore you will no longer be able to claim towards the cost of your new staff inductions or short courses.  However you may be able to claim for completed NVQ units that have been assessed and verified after January 2011 and before 30th September 2011, for which you have paid, providing your NMDS is fully complete.

Further information can be accessed at

They started the award in November 2010 and finished well ahead of their target end date which was December 2011. This is a brilliant achievement.

matrix accreditation

The matrix standard is the unique quality framework for the effective delivery of information, advice and/or guidance on learning and work. The standard is useful for organisations that deliver information, advice and/or guidance to external clients as part of their core business. As part of the ongoing commitment to deliver quality services to all our customers the Alliance became matrix accredited 3 years ago and have recently undergone an assessment to retain the standard. A number of our partners and customers agreed to be interviewed as part of the assessment and the Alliance is delighted to inform you that it has retained the standard.

Key strengths were highlighted as

  • Strong leadership and direction
  • Positive attitudes of all who were interviewed
  • Commitment to quality improvement for all customers
  • Consistency in delivery

This standard is testimony to the high standard of Information, Advice and Guidance given to all our customers across Tyne and Wear.

There were some areas for consideration which included

  • Policies and Procedures should be more accessible
  • Mapping the customer journey
  • Gathering and disseminating feedback
  • Further enhancing publicity through the various media sources so widely available

The Alliance will seek to explore all recommendations and will endeavour to improve the services offered by the Alliance. A big thank you to all who gave up their time to be interviewed as part of the accreditation, your on going support is really appreciated.

South of Tyne – End of Life Training

As part of working as a collaboration with the South of Tyne PCT, we trained over 250 staff in End of Life care, including residential, nursing and domiciliary care workers.

The courses, although moving, gave a lot of food for thought and for some carers who said they thought the course would not have taught them anything new were surprised.  For some it was very new to them and they hadn’t worked in the care sector for a long period of time, they had not come across end of life cases, were engrossed by the knowledge of the Clinicians delivering the programme, the experienced staff who shared good and bad experiences and the whole ethos of making the inevitable a good death.

A common thread that became apparent is the need for more in-depth information relating to “Do Not Attempt Resuscitate” Orders.  Carers felt they needed more guidance regarding the legal implications of these Orders.

If you have any comments or would like more information of the training please contact the Tyne and Wear Care Alliance.

 What did learners say?
Probably one of the best pieces of training ever been on
Blown away, would highly recommend
Knowing that my job will make a difference
